A WWI medal group awarded to Squadron Leader John Tudor Powell Whittaker of the RAF is to be auctioned.

A forthcoming medals and coins, arms and armour auction at Woolley & Wallis of Salisbury will feature the Great War Military Cross group awarded to Squadron Leader John Tudor Powell Whittaker of the RAF.

The group comprises of the Military Cross, British War and Victory Medals, India General Service 1908-35 with one clasp, a French Croix de Guerre with palms, and Order of the Crown from Italy and a Croce al Merito di Guerra from Italy. The lot is estimated to reach £1,500-£2,000.

A second pilot’s group comes in the form of the WWII Air Force Cross group awarded to Squadron Leader Harold Quittenden of the RAF. This group also features the Czechoslovak Observer’s Badge for training Czechoslovak crewmen for service in radar equipped night fighters.

There will also be a significant Indian element at the auction thanks to a large single-vendor consignment of medals for the campaigns fought in British India, and a 5.5in howitzer, with the carriage and limber having been constructed at the Bombay Artillery carriage manufactory in 1822. The estimate for that is £2,000-£3,000. For £400-£600 you could get something smaller in the shape of the Honourable East India Company Medal for Seringapatam 1799. There will also be a selection of Indian edged weapons.
