This is the story of one of the more colourful characters who fought at Arnhem. Major Digby Tatham Warter was in charge of A Company, 2 Para, and led the advance to the Arnhem Road bridge. Despite this being his first taste of action, Warter cemented his reputation by collecting a bowler hat and umbrella from a Dutch household and strolling around the perimeter, ignoring German fire. Even when wounded and captured at the end of the battle, he managed to escape and then disguised as a deaf and dumb Dutchman roamed the area collecting over 100 paratroopers. Neil Thornton manages to capture the spirit of Major Warter admirably, delivering a superb story of British eccentricity and daring.
