In some respects this is also the story of the Jacobite cause in Scotland, as the Irish volunteers fought for the French in the hope of French support for a return to Ireland with a Stuart king. The story starts with the origins of the Brigade and its commanders. From then on they fought in major European campaigns from 1670-1745, including the Nine Years War. The War of the Spanish Succession and, of course, the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion. The tone is a little pompous but the book is packed with detail.
