Frank was taken prisoner at Tobruk, age 21, was interned in an Italian POW camp and taught himself Italian by talking to the guards. He duly escaped but was captured after a week, however, after joining a tunnelling party he escaped again, this time spending six weeks in a hilltop village in Tuscany. In all he spent five months on the loose, before deciding that he needed to get back home to let his family he was okay. Alas he, and two other POWs, were re-captured, leading to being sent to a work camp in Germany and grim conditions.
