WILLIAM SMITH

It was the longest battle of WWII and one that worried Churchill the most. The Kriegsmarine’s attempt to strangle Britain’s supply line of food and war materiel pitted U-Boats against convoys in the freezing Atlantic. In fact, there are plenty of communications and records from Churchill, Roosevelt and Donitz on the German side.

There’s plenty of emphasis on the political side, as that determined the strategies at sea, but it comes to life when diaries and war logs from the action are used. It’s not the most exciting book, but it does have plenty of interesting detail.
