BY JAMES OPIE
As the toy soldier consultant for C&T Auctions and the author of a previous book on the subject, James knows his stuff. This book, however, was first published in 2011, which is evident from the text which is dated in places because it’s not just a list of soldiers to collect, it’s an actual guide to the entire hobby of collecting them. It covers a wide range of topics, such as budgets, condition, specialised collections and eras of soldiers but values are relegated to the final chapter. There’s a lot of information, especially for beginners, and nuggets of really expert advice scattered throughout. However, the book design is dated and some of the photography, including the opening image, is really not good enough.
