Another Hayes Manual, this time a slightly whimsical title for the English Civil War, written by Dr Stephen Bull.
If you found the Osprey guide to the English Civil War too hard going then take a look at the Haynes version, with an Operations Manual. Now, fun though these concepts may be – you know, owners’ manuals for hardware – here the concept just becomes silly. So, ignore that, what you get is the religious and parliamentary background; recruitment, command and strategy; infantry, equipment and drills; the same for cavalry; artillery; basic Civil War tactics; a guide to the first major battle at Edgehill; and then some archaeology.
There are plenty of ye olde sketches, paintings, photos of arms and armour, and re-enactors going at it. It’s hardly a comprehensive history, but it’s certainly a visually pleasing way of dipping a toe into the subject.
