While the impression today of Greece is one of holidays in the sun and the occasional economic meltdown (anyone remember Grexit?) at the turn of the 20th century the country was rife with political instability. It was into this cauldron that the man who would become Prince Philip, and a stalwart of the British Monarchy, was born.
These then are the early years of Philip, his parents and siblings, and his life in the chaos of where republicans and monarchists were perpetually at war. Until the invading Italians and Germans gave them a outside threat to deal with. His time in Scotland and in the Royal Navy get their time in the sun but there’s a lot about Greek royal politics and you might feel there’s a little too much background detail and not enough about Philip himself, but it does put it all into perspective.
