BY MARK GALEOTTI
A very timely look at the Russian dictator’s warmongering, from Chechnya to Ukraine. As much as this is about Putin’s wars, it’s also the story of post-Soviet era Russia, starting with the dissolution of the USSR and the coming to power of Boris Yeltsin. It explains how Putin, a mediocre KGB operative, managed to work his way up to the top echelons of power. Then it covers his motivations and various wars on Russia’s borders. Although detailed and complex, it’s very well written and easily digestible.
