The Germans and the Dieppe Raid The Germans and the Dieppe Raid
JAMES SHELLEY

The ill-fated Allied raid on Dieppe has been well documented, but not from the German side, which is what this book seeks to address. For a start, the defenders were hardly top-quality troops and when the General place in charge inspected them only as few weeks before the raid he found lax discipline and poor organisation. However, the defenders had done just enough training so that when the shooting started they performed well enough and combined with help from the Luftwaffe, Dieppe rapidly turned into the disaster we all know. There are insights and all manner of fascinating snippets, including Brigadier Southam’s copy of the raid plan being captured intact. Supreme Commander Rundstedt summed it up perfectly when describing the Anglo-Canadian withdrawal as: ‘Total chaos.’
