The Panzers of Prokhorovka The Panzers of Prokhorovka
BEN WHEATLEY

While the battle for Kursk is one of the undoubted major clashes on the Eastern Front, the tank battle at Prokhorovka has assumed almost mythical status. Unsurprisingly, a lot of this is due to Soviet propaganda claiming 300-400 German tanks were destroyed. Obviously this is nonsense, even the Wikipedia page lists it as 43-80 tanks/assault guns, but Ben Wheatley has unearthed some missing inventory accounts that question even that. Using an incredibly detailed approach Wheatley describes the sources and movements of the German SS units and delivers an utter refutation to most books and histories of the battle. Yes, the Germans lost the battle, but the amount of tanks and men that the Soviets had to sacrifice to win it is eye watering. The full page maps and the detailed appendix add weight to the analysis.
