If you were going to pluck six battles from the annals of history, you’d probably come up with at least half the ones here. Especially as these are British battles, rather than simply the most pivotal. For these six – Hastings (1066), Towton (1461), Waterloo (1815), Sword Beach on D-Day (1944), Imjin River (1951) and Operation Panther’s Claw (2009) you have the full range from swords and axes to advanced weaponry and air support. The author regales us with the battlefield story, setting the background and providing an analysis at the end. Obviously, the further back in time you go, the more supposition and speculation take the place of hard facts, but all are approached in the same way, giving a well-researched look at crucial battles throughout history.
